The inverter is the device that converts the direct current (DC) produced by the solar panels to alternating current (AC) that your home or office can use.

Inverters can come with different ratings including continuous, half hour and surge. They outline the amount of power that you can expect to use continuously without the inverter overheating, the rating for if an appliance is used occasionally, and finally a high surge to allow the inverter to hold a high rating for a few seconds for an appliance to start.

The main types of inverters include solar micro-inverters, string inverters and central inverters.

  • Micro-inverters:

Micro-inverters, which is also known as module inverters are most commonly used for individual solar power systems to extract the maximum amount of power from each solar system. These inverters are highly reliable and often include up to 10 years warranty, however add a significant cost to the solar power system.

  • String inverters:

String inverters are commonly used in grid-tied systems where solar panels are wired together in series. These inverters are designed to be wired to a series of 8 to 15 solar panels and are currently the most widely used inverters. As a safety precaution, they are designed to shut down in the event that the utility grid goes down.

  • Central inverters:

Central inverters are a type of string inverter that are used in larger scale solar systems. Cost is higher for these inverters however they are easier to install and have higher efficiency.

Founded in Austria in 1945, they have over 65 years experience producing innovative and intelligent power storage solutions. Originally a manufacturer of battery chargers, transformers and welding equipment, they’ve spent the last 20 years developing and manufacturing solar inverters and monitoring equipment, including solar battery chargers.

Fronius inverters have become a benchmark in the field, with the Galvo and Symo inverters receiving the 2013 Plus X Award for High Quality, Functionality and Ecology. The Galvo inverter was also named the best product of the year for 2013. Earlier awards include an Austrian prize for innovation for the Sunrise solar inverter in 1997, and the Solarix standalone sine-wave inverter in 1991. Their IG inverter range won the Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Award in 2008, and is only just being phased out after 15 years in the field.

Fronius Primo (1 Phase) 3.8kW - 15.0kW

Note: This inverter is rated for up to 1000 V open-circuit. Nominal, Operating, and MPP voltages based on 600 V system design. Actual DC system voltage is dependent on PV string-sizing, not inverter input capacity.

Solar Edge

The SolarEdge DC-AC PV inverter is specifically designed to work with the SolarEdge power optimizers. Because MPPT and voltage management are handled separately for each module by the power optimizer, the inverter is only responsible for DC to AC inversion. Consequently, it is a less complicated, more cost effective, more reliable solar inverter with a standard 12 year warranty, extendable to 20 or 25 years.

The fixed string voltage ensures operation at the highest efficiency at all times (>97% weighted efficiency) independent of string length and temperature. In addition to its functionality as a DC-optimized inverter, the SolarEdge inverter also manages battery and system energy as part of the StorEdge system.

SolarEdge Optimisers

The SolarEdge power optimiser is a DC/DC converter which is connected by installers to each solar panel, turning them into smart panels. The SolarEdge power optimisers increase energy output from PV systems by constantly tracking the maximum power point (MPPT) of each panel individually. Furthermore, the power optimisers monitor the performance of each panel and communicate performance data to the SolarEdge monitoring platform for enhanced, cost-effective panel-level maintenance. Each power optimiser is equipped with the unique SafeDC™ feature which automatically reduces panels’ DC voltage to a safe level whenever the inverter or grid power is shut down (unless connected to a StorEdge inverter operating in backup mode).

Sun Grow (1 Phase) Inverter

Feature Highlights: 
  • The new “GEN2” has all the good points of the old series, while it has some nice new stuff too.
  • The SG3K-D to the SG5K-D, come in a cool new silver case, while it still has an LCD screen too. This is good news because some makes have been busy to take their LCD’s out. If there is no LCD then it is not as easy to get info about your PV kit.
  • Of course they all have Wi Fi too so you can see the info on your phone or PC.
  • Good warranty as well, its 5 years, but it won’t cost much if you want to add more.

Sun Grow (3 Phase) Inverter

If you have three phase power at your home, then here is the answer to your PV needs.

Feature Highlights: 
  • The Sungrow three phase in fact has all the things you need in an inverter. It has dual MPPT so it gets the best out of the sunlight that is there.
  • So as you might know, like all Sungrow products, it has a great out put rate which is 98%.
  • It does not make much noise, that is, the unit itself runs on next to no power.
  • Its such a good design that it doesn’t get hot and so it doesn’t need a fan to stay cool.
  • It has Wi Fi too so that you can go on line and see what your PV system is doing. This unit lets you hook up more panels in a string with input up to 1000V, so that’s a lot!
  • It comes in 5, 6 and 8 kW sizes too, so one of these has to suit your needs.

Sun Grow Hybrid Inverter

The Sungrow SH5K has been here for a while now, it is in fact a "hybrid inverter".

Feature Highlights: 
  • This is great if you want to use it as part of a PV storage set up now or later.
  • But, there are a few things that you will need to work out, though before taking the plunge. In short this unit has HFIBC too. So what is that? When it charges a battery, it does it in a far better way.
  • It has 48V on the battery and also a max charge and discharge of 65A. Due to a great IP 65 design it is great for Off Grid projects too.
  • And then It has a 3000 watt back up on the battery as well to cap it off.
  • What’s more, this unit has its own EMS set up too.
  • So to wrap up, it has a DI/DO port for both Li-on and lead acid too.
