The Greens push WA Government for renewable energy
Thursday, 12 Apr 2018

Despite a drastic increase in LNG (liquefied natural gas) over the past year, the Greens are calling for WA to focus on renewable energy.

The Greens push WA Government for renewable energy

According to Greens Mining and Pastoral MLC, Robin Chapple, the state government needs to be directing their focus away from LNG and focusing on renewable energy.

The WA Government launched an LNG jobs task force last March on the back of extensive growth in the industry where LNG volume increased by 38% to a record 32.7 million tonnes, and is positioning itself as a global leader in LNG.

But Mr Chapple said it isn’t wise to invest so much into such a finite resource.

He explains having established a taskforce with a sole focus on renewable energy would have been a far better enterprise.

Both Mr Chapple and Regional Development Minister, Alannah MacTiernan, have agreed that due to WA’s ideal location with high solar radiation levels, our state could be leading the world in renewable energy generation and technological developments in solar resources.

The renewable energy sector in WA, and across Australia, would have seen a huge spike in resources if a solar energy taskforce were established, as sales in spodumene (the leading lithium bearing mineral in WA and is the prime resource in solar batteries) jumped 166% to reach $780 million last year.

With further LNG expansion in the Pilbara, ancient rock art could be destroyed. As solar generation is a far less invasive practice, not only would we be boosting productivity in a renewable resource and creating jobs, we would be having less of an impact on our native environment.

As increased pressure is on the State Government to begin investing in renewable solar energy, the time to invest in your future is now. With constant focus on dwindling resources, our attention needs to shift to an energy solution we know we can trust and rely on.
